THE JON PERTWEE ERA
(1970-1974)
Jon Pertwee helped make Doctor Who "domestic" (to quote a Ninth Doctor phrase). Being exiled to Earth in the late 20th Century and teaming up with UNIT the stories tended to be more looking at the faults of the British establishment in early parts of the era but when the Doctor got his freedom again the use of UNIT became less.
The TARDIS arrives on Earth in a shower of Nestene pods falling to the ground and The Doctor ended up working for Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart on a more regular basis and meets up with Elizabeth Shaw. This started with repelling the invasion by the Nestenes in Spearhead from Space and then the Silurians awaking from there primevil slumber and the Doctor failing to get them and the humans to co-exist and eventually seeing their underground base being destroyed. Britain's attempt at space exploration goes wrong and The Ambassidors of Death arrive to cause mayhem but the Doctor saves the day. The first season of the Third Doctor finishes with the Doctor being thrown into a parrallel universe of the drilling experiment to drill into the Earth's crust that the UNIT team had been overseeing and the Doctor sees what will happen if the Earth's crust is penerated in our world in Inferno.
Season Eight saw the introduction of the Master and Jo Grant and Captains Yates became another UNIT regular. The Master makes his mark by trying to bring back the Autons again and then tries to start World War Three in The Mind of Evil. The Master tries to bring more destruction by bringing the Axonites to Earth in the Claws of Axos. The Doctor follows the Master to the 25th Century to prevent the use of the Doomsday weapon in the Colony in Space. The season finishes with a trip to Devils End where the Master is trying to bring back Azal in The Daemons.
Season 9 saw the return of the Daleks in Day of the Daleks and then the Doctor's first visit to Peladon where he going up against The Curse of Peladon. The Silurian's underwater cousins make an apperence in The Sea Devils and the Master is once again involved. Skybase above the planet Solos is where the Doctor is sent by the Time Lords in The Mutants. We find the Master has something to do with the destruction of Atlantis in The Time Monster which completes the Season.
Season 10 started with the anniversary which introduces Omega into Time Lord mythology and sees the reapperance of previous Doctors. William Hartnell makes on vision apperences only due to ill health but Partick Troughton is fooling about and interacting with his successor in The Three Doctors as they destroy Omega and regain Gallifey's power source that was being drained by the black hole Omega was in his antimatter state. The Doctor's exile is finally lifted due to his help. The Doctor and Jo end up in a Miniscope and meet the Drashigs in Carnival of Monsters and the Draconians are on the brink of war with humans after the Master's interference in The Frontier in Space and this leads The Doctor and Jo to Spridon where he encounters his greatest foes the Daleks in Planet of the Daleks. The series finishes with it's most memorable story as Global Chemicals starts The Green Death in South Wales. It is in this story Jo Grant meets scientist Cliff Jones and goes off with him to the Amazon and The Doctor picks up a blue crystal from Metabelis 3.
Season 11 was to be the last for Jon Pertwee and the Last season for Captain Yates. Elisabeth Sladen makes her debut as Sarah Jane Smith, the plucky journalist, who is now one of the most defining characters of the series ever. The Master was going to be the cause for the Doctor regenerating at the end of Season 11 but Roger Delgado who played him was killed in a road crash in 1973 so the story was subsiquently re-written.
Sarah's first story sees here travelling back in time to medieval England and seeing the Sontaran Linx who is The Time Warrior. The Doctor and Sarah return ot london to find Dinosaurs have caused London to be exacuated and the Doctor soon finds they are past of Operation Golden age in Invasion of the Dinosaurs. The Dalek's last encounter with The Third Doctor is on the Planet Exxilon in Death to the Daleks and then the Doctor decides to visit King Peladon and finds he is 50 years too late in The Monster of Peladon. The last 3rd Doctor story sees the Metablis crystal being needed by the Great One on Metabelis 3 in Planet of the Spiders.
Jon Pertwee has established what was to become Doctor Who's golden age and anyone who followed would have a really difficult job. The actor who followed him would be beyond all expectations.
